Department of Food Technology and Management is established in 2020-21 at Loknete Shamrao Peje, Government College of Engineering, Ratnagiri.B.Tech in Food Technology and Management is a four year undergraduate program having intake capacity of 60 students. This department is affiliated to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University, Lonere.
Food Technology is a field of science that deals with the techniques involved in the production of food such as production, preservation, processing, quality management, packaging, labelling and distribution of food products. This programme covers courses like food microbiology, food chemistry, beverage technology, processing of fruits and vegetables, meat fish & poultry technology, food regulation & quality control, food rheology & texture, etc.
Food Technology and Management combines practical experience with theoretical knowledge to prepare students for real-world challenges. Food technology provides opportunities to do start up in food sector. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has implemented schemes like Chief Minister Agricultureand Food Processing Scheme.(CM AFPS), Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY), PM Formalisation of Micro food processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme and Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI) offering financial, technical, and business aids to establish food processing enterprises.
Research in food technology field. leads to improved food products that are both safe and nutritious. Research helps students to think critically about different project ideas and working on research project then gather and analyse the data to draw their conclusions. It also provides students with a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of their subjects.
During summer and winter vacations student undergo one month internship and in last semester six month internship. Internship serve as a crucial link between academic learning and real-world application, providing students with hands-on experience that enhances their understanding of food production, safety,and innovation. Through internships, students can investigate many career options in the subject of food science.
Industry institution interaction of department with national and international food industries such as Gadre Marine-Ratnagiri, AMUL-Anand, Britannia-Pune, Nexton Foods-Pune,Nestle-Switzerland, Desai Foods-Pune, Hindustan Foods-Mumbai & ITC Ltd.-Ranjangaon.
